The Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) is the leading national research institution in the area of molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry. IMB is a member of UNESCO Global Network for Molecular and Cell Biology since 1995. The mission of the Institute is:

  1. To conduct internationally-competitive basic and applied studies in the area of molecular biology and related disciplines of cellular and structural biology, molecular genetics and bioorganic chemistry and their applications in medicine and pharmacy.
  2. To prepare the next generation of scientists by offering high quality research training in its PhD programs. The Institute collaborates with leading national and foreign universities to promote teaching of molecular life sciences at various levels.
  3. To develop research projects with national and international scientific organizations and companies as a national and regional center for basic and applied research in cellular biology, epigenetics, proteomics, bioinformatics and bionanotechnology.

IMB produces 40-50 high quality research papers per year published in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of  molecular biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry and bio-organic chemistry.

IMB collaborates and runs joint research project with many universities and research institutes in Europe, Canada and the USA.

IMB is educates Ph.D. students in three disciplines: Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics and Bioorganic Chemistry. The Institute has traditional bilateral co-operation with several Bulgarian   universities for training undergraduate and graduate (MS) students in molecular biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry and bio-organic chemistry.
