S. Landjeva – Current Projects

  • Chromosome localization and mapping genes and QTL related to important agronomic traits in bread wheat (in co-operation with T. Pshenichnikova, Institute of Cytology and Genetics, Russian Academy of Sciences – Siberian Divison, Novisibirsk, Russia, and A. Börner, IPK, Gatersleben, Germany).

This research addresses the elucidating of the genetic control of ecological plasticity and adaptation of wheat to diverse eco-climatic conditions. A set of inter-varietal chromosome substitution lines and a set of single chromosome recombinant lines are used to identify chromosomes and chromosome regions associated with important agronomic traits such as heading, yield components and grain quality under contrasting climates.

  • Plant genetic resources – characterization, evaluation and preservation: case studies in wheat and barley (in co-operation with A. Börner, Leibniz-Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung (IPK), Gatersleben, Germany).

The comprehensive characterization and evaluation of the plant genetic resources is of importance for preserving the natural and introduced genetic variation. This research has two key aspects: 1) studies on the genetic variation and the genetic control of seed vigour and longevity in wheat and barley, and 2) studies on the contribution of the wheat semi-dwarfing genes on the agronomic traits under the drought-liable climatic conditions of Bulgaria.

  • Molecular genetic characterization of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes (in co-operation with M. Molnár-Láng, Agricultural Research Institute, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Martonvásár, Hungary).

Part of this work is focused on the molecular cytogenetic characterization of wheat lines derived from wheat × Aegilops crosses and the effects of alien genetic introgressions on agronomic traits and physiological responses to abiotic stresses.
