Научните изследвания на секцията са свързани с изучаване на механизмите на светлинно- индуцираното преобразуване на светлинната енергия в биологични мембрани (висши растения и мутанти на висши растения, тилакоидни мембрани от мутанти на Synechocystis PCC6803); адаптация на висшите растения към условията на околната среда; участие на активни кислордни форми в стрес-индуцираните инактивационни процеси; влияние на структурната организация и електричните свойства на пигмент-белтъчните комплекси върху ефективността на преобразуване на слънчевата енергия; организация и функционални взаимодействия на пигментите в двете фотоситеми, характеристика на липидната фаза на тилакоидната мембрана и нейната роля за структурната стабилност на главните пигмент- белтъчни комплекси и ефективността на първичните процеси на фотосинтезата; статични и динамични свойства на биологичните комплекси; белтъчна конформация и стабилност; абсорбция на белтъци върху твърда повърхност.
