GENOME DYNAMICS AND STABILITY – IAEA National Project
IAEA National TC Project BUL5016„Improving the Productivity and Quality of Economically Important Crops through Mutation Breeding and Biotechnology“ 2020-2021, Project coordinator from IPPG – BAS: Lubomir Stoilov
Partner organizations: Agrobioinstitute-Sofia, Institute of Plant Genetic Resources-Sadovo, Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics-Sofia, Maritsa Vegetable Crops Research Institute-Plovdiv, Institute of Food Preservation and Quality-Plovdiv
Project leader of module Wheat: Prof. Elena Todorovska, Agrobioinstitute-Sofia
The project is aimed at development of varieties of wheat and Solanaceae crops through mutation breeding and biotechnology approaches that improve yield stability, quality and tolerance/resistance to major abiotic and biotic stress factors in order to contriute to food security in Bulgaria. The main goal of module wheat is to isolate and characterize mutant lines of bread wheat with desired characteristics through molecular and phenotypic approaches which is expected to provide new opportunities for modern wheat breeding in Bulgaria. The bread wheat mutant population, developed in the preceding project BUL5014, is an important prerequisite for the selection of mutant lines with increased and stable productivity, improved grain quality and tolerance to environmental stress, with potential to be included in the current ecologically-oriented wheat breeding programmes.
