Project SteviaNanoBiotech – Annotation

With the development of industrialization, customer interest is increasingly directed to the consumption of natural products. The presence of biologically active secondary metabolites (BASM) in medicinal and aromatic plants makes them a good raw material for the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The target object of the SteviaNanoBiotech project – stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni.) is a valuable medicinal plant. Stevia leaves have been used as a low-calorie sweetener for centuries, and nowadays it is consumed all over the world.

Plant micropropagation is an alternative to field plant production by seeds, to obtain biomass as a sustainable source of bioactive secondary metabolites. Biological active compounds’ productivity is strongly influenced by media components, plant growth regulators, pH, temperature, light, etc.

The main goal of the SteviaNanoBiotech project is to synthesize nanofibers from low molecular weight peptidomimetics that will be used as a biologically active agents (silver or plant growth regulators) delivery system, and to evaluate their impact on the growth and BASM accumulation of Stevia.
