Prof. Valya Vasileva – among the eight selected participants from over 860 applications in Malmö Residency 2025 Program
Prof. Dr. Valya Vasileva, Director of the Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, is among the eight scientists and innovators from around the world selected to participate in the prestigious international Malmö Residency 2025 program. In addition to personal success, this is also a recognition of the high scientific level and international commitment of the Bulgarian academic community.
Malmö Residency is an initiative of over 70 institutions, universities, companies and public organizations in the Swedish city of Malmö. The program is funded by the Swedish Economic Development Agency (Tillväxtverket), Malmö Municipality and the Swedish Institute. It offers a one-month stay, full logistical support and opportunities for collaboration with international experts working on topical areas such as green transition, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, food innovation, smart and digital cities, as well as cultural and creative industries.
In 2025, over 860 candidates from 88 countries applied to participate, with Prof. Vasileva being the only selected representative from Bulgaria and Southeastern Europe.
During her stay in Malmö, Prof. Vasileva will work at the intersection of plant biology, sustainable agriculture and artificial intelligence.
She shares: “During my stay in Malmö, I would like to establish contacts with entrepreneurs, researchers and industrial partners to jointly develop new ideas for sustainable crops and AI-based biological solutions. We will also seek to exchange experience in areas combining biotechnology and digital transformation. We are currently starting activities on an approved Horizon Europe project on understudied legumes, and my participation in the Malmö Residency creates a favorable environment for building strategic partnerships and developing joint scientific and applied initiatives.”
Prof. Valya Vasileva’s participation in Malmö Residency 2025 affirms the role of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences as a leading scientific institution engaged in global challenges in the field of sustainable development, innovation and international cooperation.
