The current research pursued in the department concerns two major contemporary programs: „Agro-biological investigations and application of the obtained results in plant-growing and animal-breeding” and „Medical and biological research and its application in development of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools and approaches in human and veterinary medicine practice”. Investigations are directed mainly towards analysis of the molecular nature of plant genetic resources, carcinogenesis and genome imprinting. Highly qualified specialists to operate on a national and international level are being trained through different forms of PhD, specializations and representation in the European research area.

The studies correspond to one of the major research priority of IPPG concerning the mechanisms of functioning and variability of eukaryotic genome on the molecular, chromosome and cellular level.

Research Area

The basic RESEARCH PRIORITIES of the department for the period 2013-2015 are as follows:

  • Molecular mechanisms of DNA repair and genome stability in higher plants.
  • Chromosome and DNA markers for genome identification and assessment of mutant and natural genetic diversity in plants.
  • Molecular mechanisms of eukaryotic carcinogenesis and genome imprinting. Antitumor potential of Bulgarian medicinal plants.
  • Investigation of the epigenetic mechanisms of programming and reprogramming of the genome in the development of eukaryotic organisms.
  •  Studying the regulation of expression of imprinted genes.
Scientific projects

The following scientific projects have been carried out during 2012:

International funding:

  • A project funded by IAEA-Vienna “Isolation and characterization of genes for radiation induced DNA damage repair in barley”, Coordination Research Program “DNA damage, repair and mutagenesis in plants” 2009-2014q Project leader Assist. Prof. Dr. Vasilissa Manova.
  • European Social Fund via Ministry of Education and Science from Operative Program “Development of Human Resources”, BG051PO001-3.3.06-0025: “A Support for construction and development of young competitive scientific potential in the area of physiology, phytochemistry, genomics, proteomics and biodiversity of eukaryotic organisms”, (2012-2015). Project Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Leonid Penkov.

National funding:

  • A project funded from National Science FundOxidative stress in economically important plant species and possibilities for its alleviation by application of ecologically friendly substances. Duration 2011-2013. Project leader: Dessislava Todorova, Assis. Prof. PhD. Partners: Institute of organic chemistry with centre of phytochemistry – BAS, Institute of biophysics and Biomedical Engineering – BAS.

The investigations in the department are devoted to:

  • Analysis of DNA repair mechanisms in plant genome.

  • Structural and functional organization of eukaryotic genome and development of DNA markers for gene and genome identification in plants.

  • Genetic and epigenetic regulatory mechanisms of tumor suppressor genes and proto-oncogenes.

  • Genetic imprinting in mammals.
